"Spotlight Artist" Billy Joe Shaver
__________________________________ _________________________________ Billy Joe Shaver (He was born August 16, 1939 in Corsicana, Texas) is an American country music singer and songwriter. Shaver's 1973 album Old Five and Dimers Like Me is a classic in the outlaw country genre.Shaver was raised by his mother, Victory Watson Shaver, after his father Virgil left the family before he was born. Until he was 12, he spent a great deal of time with his grandmother in Corsicana, Texas so that his mother could work in Waco. He sometimes accompanied his mother to her job at a local nightclub, where he began to be exposed to country music.[1]Shaver's mother remarried about the time that his grandmother died, so he and his older sister Patricia moved in with their mother and new stepfather. Shaver left school after the eighth grade to help his uncles pick cotton, but occasionally returned to school to play sports.[2] Shaver joined the U.S. Navy on his seventeenth birthday. Upon his discharge, he worked a series of dead-end jobs, including trying to be a rodeo cowboy. About this time, Shaver met and married Brenda Joyce Tindell. They had one son, John Edwin, known as Eddy, who was born in 1962. The two divorced and remarried several times. [3] Shaver took a job at a lumber mill to make ends meet. One day his right hand (his dominant hand) became caught in the machinery, and he lost the better part of two fingers and contracted a serious infection. He eventually recovered, and taught himself to play the guitar without those missing fingers.[4] Shaver decided that life was too short to do something he didn't enjoy, so he set out one day to hitchhike to L.A.. He couldn't get a ride west, and ended up accompanying a man who dropped him off just outside of Memphis, Tennessee. The next ride brought him to Nashville, where he found a job as a songwriter for $50/week.[5] His work came to the attention of Waylon Jennings, who filled most of his album Honky Tonk Heroes with Shaver's songs. Other artists, including Elvis Presley and Kris Kristofferson, began to record Shaver's music. This led to his own record deal. Unfortunately for Shaver, the first few recording companies he signed with soon folded.[6] He was never able to gain widespread recognition as a singer, although he never stopped recording his own music. After losing his wife, Brenda, and his mother to cancer in 1999, Shaver lost his son and longtime guitarist Eddy, who died at age 38 of a heroin overdose on December 31, 2000. Shaver nearly died himself the following year when he had a heart attack on stage during an Independence Day show at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, Texas. After successful heart surgery, Billy Joe came back to release a new album entited "Freedom's Child" in 2002. Billy Joe Shaver is known for his hit "Live Forever", written with the help of his son before his son's death, performed by The Highwaymen. He also wrote numerous songs for artists such as Patty Loveless and Willie Nelson. For his efforts, the Americana Music Convention awarded him their Lifetime Achievement Award in Songwriting.[7] In 1999, Shaver was invited to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. In November of 2005, Billy Joe Shaver performed on the CMT Outlaws 2005. In 2006, Shaver was inducted in the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. He recently served as spiritual advisor to Texas independent gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman. He currently lives in Waco, Texas. Shaver sings the themes to the Adult Swim Television show, Squidbillies.

"Hangin' Out With Uncle
Willam"

A Farmer's Perspective
I get asked if I consider myself a writer, a painter, a musician, or an actor; actually, I consider myself a farmer who tells stories, some of which are best told with words or pictures, while others play out best in song or make-believe. I've never depended on the land for a livelihood, but I've never been far from those who do, and I've grubbed my share of new potatoes without disturbing the roots full of even new-er ones to grub out later. It takes a bit of practice.
My farmer's soul embraces relationships that may be quite urban, yet I take comfort in the fact that, once upon a time, Everybody lived in the country. So it's easy for me to imagine the area between you and me as "new ground," space no one has occupied, let alone worked, so nobody knows just what will grow there. Ah, the mystery that awaits, as we dig and plow and pull, sharing the sweat and joy of opening space conducive to moving freely, back and forth, bringing new possibilities in new combinations, growing the best "us" the "land" and our efforts will produce.

*********************** 2 Featured Original songs Long Days / Seed Catalog Two for One By Lonnie Ratliff
Long before songwriting was anything more than a distant dream I had developed the habit of listening close to conversations around me and really paying attention to what was being said and trying to just build a larger story, song or movie in my own mind out of what was being said. Some of these little life segments have stuck with me to this day and some have ended up in my songs but this is the only conversation that ever developed into two songs that I am really proud of. At the time I was working at a DX service station in Pryor, Oklahoma during the day and buying and selling cars on the side. It seems like all my life I have always had some kind of little sideline going on in addition to whatever it was I was doing to pay the bills. Anyway the man who owned the service station was Brice Wallis and like me he always had his hands in everything. In his case I think he turned his extra efforts into money and not just something else to worry about. Brice’s main job was as a post office letter carrier and his two services stations in Pryor were his sideline. One afternoon we were not very busy at the station and Brice came by and we got to talking and he said there was this little old lady at the end of his mail route who didn’t have any family left and hardly ever got any mail but she was always waiting out on the porch when he came by on his mail route. He said she was always making him some lemonade or cookies and he could tell she just wanted some company and since hers was the last house on his route he would talk to her for a few minutes and he got into the habit of always saving back the junk mail he was supposed to hand out and he always made sure she got something if he could. Over the years he got to know her from these little 5 minute snippets of visiting and one day he mentioned how the days were getting longer and she said, yes it’s hard to believe that such long days can turn into such short years. Even then I had enough sense to realize that was a pretty profound statement. I also had enough sense to know I didn’t have the talent yet to turn it into a song or story so I just filed it away for future use. This was probably about 1975 and around 1990 I started the song “Long Days” and soon finished it with Canadian songwriter Sharon Anderson. That in itself would have been a pretty unique songwriter story but along those same lines I remembered how my great grandmother used to always just sit and wait for the mail when I stayed with her for a few weeks when I was six years old. She would always just watch the clock and say Lonnie, that mailman is running late today. Her kids had all moved to California like so many “Okies” before them had done and I remember it would really make her day to get a letter from one of them. I also remember they didn’t write very often and I saw how sad she would get when she went through her mail and there was nothing there but a catalog or some other kind of advertisement. In my little six year old mind there was just no excuse for them to treat my grandma that way and it left a lifelong impression with me. I made it a point to keep in touch with my mom up until the day she died with a phone call every week and I would always write a short letter or send her a joke I cut out of the paper or some goofy postcard I had found. I took things from this and added to the story Brice told me about the little old lady on his mail route and came up with the second song from one story when I wrote “Seed Catalog” with my good buddy Tom Mitchell. I have always felt like in both songs we were able to simplify a pretty complex story. "Long Days" All those long days Muscles strained and shoulders bent All those long days He thought would never end Long days without slack End to end and back to back They don't add up, the answer isn't clear How'd those long days turn into such short years (1/2 Verse) The old corral is falling down He'll have to fix that up before too long That's where old Jett threw Jimmy And Walter had to make him crawl back on (Bridge) Leave those muddy boots outside the door Or mama's gonna skin you boys alive Walter hears those sounds from long ago And like old friends they're welcome to drop by (Repeat Chorus) (Tag) Walter Hudson's up at daylight A habit now of sixty some odd years __________________________________________________________ "Click Yellow Speaker" Bengt Pedersen singing Seed Catalog Should start playing in 8 to 10 seconds after clicking on Play Tested on Real Player & Media Player.
