"Spotlight Artist"

Billy Joe Shaver

Billy Joe Shaver (He was born August 16, 1939 in Corsicana, Texas) is an American country music singer and songwriter. Shaver's 1973 album Old Five and Dimers Like Me is a classic in the outlaw country genre.

Shaver was raised by his mother, Victory Watson Shaver, after his father Virgil left the family before he was born. Until he was 12, he spent a great deal of time with his grandmother in Corsicana, Texas so that his mother could work in Waco. He sometimes accompanied his mother to her job at a local nightclub, where he began to be exposed to country music.[1]

Shaver's mother remarried about the time that his grandmother died, so he and his older sister Patricia moved in with their mother and new stepfather. Shaver left school after the eighth grade to help his uncles pick cotton, but occasionally returned to school to play sports.[2]

Shaver joined the U.S. Navy on his seventeenth birthday. Upon his discharge, he worked a series of dead-end jobs, including trying to be a rodeo cowboy. About this time, Shaver met and married Brenda Joyce Tindell. They had one son, John Edwin, known as Eddy, who was born in 1962. The two divorced and remarried several times. [3]

Shaver took a job at a lumber mill to make ends meet. One day his right hand (his dominant hand) became caught in the machinery, and he lost the better part of two fingers and contracted a serious infection. He eventually recovered, and taught himself to play the guitar without those missing fingers.[4]

Shaver decided that life was too short to do something he didn't enjoy, so he set out one day to hitchhike to L.A.. He couldn't get a ride west, and ended up accompanying a man who dropped him off just outside of Memphis, Tennessee. The next ride brought him to Nashville, where he found a job as a songwriter for $50/week.[5] His work came to the attention of Waylon Jennings, who filled most of his album Honky Tonk Heroes with Shaver's songs. Other artists, including Elvis Presley and Kris Kristofferson, began to record Shaver's music. This led to his own record deal.

Unfortunately for Shaver, the first few recording companies he signed with soon folded.[6] He was never able to gain widespread recognition as a singer, although he never stopped recording his own music.

After losing his wife, Brenda, and his mother to cancer in 1999, Shaver lost his son and longtime guitarist Eddy, who died at age 38 of a heroin overdose on December 31, 2000. Shaver nearly died himself the following year when he had a heart attack on stage during an Independence Day show at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, Texas. After successful heart surgery, Billy Joe came back to release a new album entited "Freedom's Child" in 2002.

Billy Joe Shaver is known for his hit "Live Forever", written with the help of his son before his son's death, performed by The Highwaymen. He also wrote numerous songs for artists such as Patty Loveless and Willie Nelson. For his efforts, the Americana Music Convention awarded him their Lifetime Achievement Award in Songwriting.[7]

In 1999, Shaver was invited to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. In November of 2005, Billy Joe Shaver performed on the CMT Outlaws 2005. In 2006, Shaver was inducted in the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. He recently served as spiritual advisor to Texas independent gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman. He currently lives in Waco, Texas.

Shaver sings the themes to the Adult Swim Television show, Squidbillies.

This is a story about a soldier that

The one line in this song pretty much
sums it up.

If I was a country band out there working

sing it every time I went on stage.

I realize that many artists may not have enough money to ship their music to all of the DJ's or they may just want to send out a test sample that they can monitor and see how well the public likes their music before they commit to a mass mailing that is so expensive.  This list is not complete in any way but it should help artists decide which DJ's are most likely to play your music.  Save this list because next week I will have more DJ's.

A Farmer's Perspective

I get asked if I consider myself a writer, a painter, a musician, or an actor; actually, I consider myself a farmer who tells stories, some of which are best told with words or pictures, while others play out best in song or make-believe.  I've never depended on the land for a livelihood, but I've never been far from those who do, and I've grubbed my share of new potatoes without disturbing the roots full of  even new-er ones to grub out later. It takes a bit of practice.

My farmer's soul embraces relationships that may be quite urban, yet I take comfort in the fact that, once upon a time,

Everybody lived in the country.  So it's easy for me to imagine the area between you and me as "new ground," space no one has occupied, let alone worked,  so nobody knows just what will grow there.  Ah, the mystery that awaits, as we dig and plow and pull, sharing the sweat and joy of opening  space conducive to moving freely, back and forth, bringing new possibilities in new combinations, growing the best "us" the "land"  and our efforts will produce.

Long Days / Seed Catalog

Two for One

By

Lonnie Ratliff

Long before songwriting was anything more than a distant dream I had developed the habit of listening close to conversations around me and really paying attention to what was being said and trying to just build a larger story, song or movie in my own mind out of what was being said. Some of these little life segments have stuck with me to this day and some have ended up in my songs but this is the only conversation that ever developed into two songs that I am really proud of.

At the time I was working at a DX service station in Pryor, Oklahoma during the day and buying and selling cars on the side. It seems like all my life I have always had some kind of little sideline going on in addition to whatever it was I was doing to pay the bills. Anyway the man who owned the service station was Brice Wallis and like me he always had his hands in everything. In his case I think he turned his extra efforts into money and not just something else to worry about. Brice’s main job was as a post office letter carrier and his two services stations in Pryor were his sideline.

One afternoon we were not very busy at the station and Brice came by and we got to talking and he said there was this little old lady at the end of his mail route who didn’t have any family left and hardly ever got any mail but she was always waiting out on the porch when he came by on his mail route. He said she was always making him some lemonade or cookies and he could tell she just wanted some company and since hers was the last house on his route he would talk to her for a few minutes and he got into the habit of always saving back the junk mail he was supposed to hand out and he always made sure she got something if he could.

Over the years he got to know her from these little 5 minute snippets of visiting and one day he mentioned how the days were getting longer and she said, yes it’s hard to believe that such long days can turn into such short years. Even then I had enough sense to realize that was a pretty profound statement. I also had enough sense to know I didn’t have the talent yet to turn it into a song or story so I just filed it away for future use. This was probably about 1975 and around 1990 I started the song “Long Days” and soon finished it with Canadian songwriter Sharon Anderson. That in itself would have been a pretty unique songwriter story but along those same lines I remembered how my great grandmother used to always just sit and wait for the mail when I stayed with her for a few weeks when I was six years old. She would always just watch the clock and say Lonnie, that mailman is running late today. Her kids had all moved to California like so many “Okies” before them had done and I remember it would really make her day to get a letter from one of them. I also remember they didn’t write very often and I saw how sad she would get when she went through her mail and there was nothing there but a catalog or some other kind of advertisement. In my little six year old mind there was just no excuse for them to treat my grandma that way and it left a lifelong impression with me. I made it a point to keep in touch with my mom up until the day she died with a phone call every week and I would always write a short letter or send her a joke I cut out of the paper or some goofy postcard I had found. I took things from this and added to the story Brice told me about the little old lady on his mail route and came up with the second song from one story when I wrote “Seed Catalog” with my good buddy Tom Mitchell. I have always felt like in both songs we were able to simplify a pretty complex story.

"Long Days"
(Lonnie Ratliff / Sharon Anderson)

Walter Hudson's up at daylight
A habit now of sixty some odd years
There really ain't much reason
'Cause not that much needs doing around there
Forty acres on the edge of town
He paid the bank off fifteen years ago
He buried Martha last November
And for the first time Walter's startin' to feel old

(Chorus)

All those long days
Muscles strained and shoulders bent
All those long days
He thought would never end
Long days without slack
End to end and back to back
They don't add up, the answer isn't clear
How'd those long days turn into such short years

(1/2 Verse)

The old corral is falling down
He'll have to fix that up before too long
That's where old Jett threw Jimmy
And Walter had to make him crawl back on

(Bridge)

Leave those muddy boots outside the door
Or mama's gonna skin you boys alive
Walter hears those sounds from long ago
And like old friends they're welcome to drop by

(Repeat Chorus)

(Tag)
Walter Hudson's up at daylight
A habit now of sixty some odd years

Seed Catalog

She sits by the window and waits for the mailman
By the clock on her mantle he's a little bit late
There may be a letter from her son or her daughter
Well here he is now, she walks to the gate.... but

It's a seed catalog from some place in Nebraska
With pictures of tomatoes you can grow in your house
She could go see her daughter or son if they'd ask her
But she don't want to put no one out

(Inst)

(Bridge)

The least they could do is drop her a postcard
Some pictures of the grandkids would make her so proud.... but

It's a seed catalog from some place in Nebraska
With pictures of tomatoes you can grow in your house

(Inst)

Oh the kids are all home now but it took a funeral
And it's a little too late for what they're thinking about
The grandchildren stare at those plants in the kitchen
Grandma grew tomatoes right here in her house... from

A seed catalog from some place in Nebraska
She grew tomatoes right there in her house
She could have gone to her daughter or son's if they'd ask her
But she didn't want to put no one out

About Peggy Lynn

Demo Session Produced by Lonnie Ratliff
My name is Peggy Lynn and I am a Country Singer. I was born a native California girl the daughter of a Contralto Soloist and will never forget singing in church standing by my mothers side as she would belt out her voice across the pews. Though I Come from a musical family, I have sang in a many choirs and choruses from here to the midwest and played several instruments including the flute, clarinet, piano and guitar but my favorite instrument will always be my voice. Have had many opportunities to sing the National Anthem for sporting events in my local area but a few stand out to be my favorites. One in particular was when I sang at the Stampede Baseball field while the Lakers Cheerleaders were dropped onto the field by helicopter. I have also been escorted onto the field by Harley Davidson with a team of female Harley Riders! I have been named the keynote singer by a local college in my area and was able to sing the National Anthem for Naturalization Ceremonies at The Pomona Fair Grounds. So by now I guess you know I like to sing the National Anthem. I wrote and produced all the songs on my first record Paper Doll World. I just got back from Nashville and recorded a few songs written by some fabulous writers there. The musicians there are such a pleasure to work with and very professional. I look forward to going back to work on some more songs soon.

Picking Songs For Your CD

By

Lonnie Ratliff

This is a hard subject to tackle so I will just start out by telling you how I find songs for the artist I produce. First off I get all the politics out of the process. My job as a producer is to make the very best CD or demo for the artist who is paying me as I possibly can. It is not to talk the artist into cutting mine and my buddies songs just so we will have another demo. I have about 400 songs that I have collected over the years that I have a lot of faith in and about 30 Nashville songwriters that I put the word out to when I need material so I have a pretty deep catalog to work from to begin with.

The first thing I do is ask the artist to E Mail me a list of about a dozen or so songs they have heard in their lifetime that they wish they had been the first one to record. This gives me a starting place and I will then go through my pitch catalog and make up a CD of about 20 songs and send to them. On this first “Pitch” CD I do not send them lyrics or tell them who wrote what. Not only do I take my politics out in the beginning by sending them this blind CD they cannot be influenced by anything other than the songs they hear. Artist tend to want to cut songs by songwriters they have heard of and I have also noticed they will tend to want to cut a song that I wrote sometimes. They seem to think I may try harder on my own songs. I just make sure they are not influenced by this by not telling them who wrote what. This way they only listen for the best song.

As far as cutting songs by famous writers go the truth is, you as an unknown artist, are NOT going to get the next “Hit” written by whoever it was that wrote “Jesus Take The Wheel” . That writer whoever it is can take his or her songs to the biggest artists in town and get “cuts” by someone they know will make them a lot of money so they can’t afford to tie up a song with an unknown artist. The trick is that you have to find the songs and recognize them as “hits” before some artist on music row does. One trick that is good to learn is how to hear beyond the demo. Just because a girl is singing the demo don’t mean a guy can’t record the song. If you can just learn to hear beyond this it will give you a lot more songs to choose from. You can also go back to the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s and find some great songs that are album cuts on albums that had one or two hits and eight other album cuts no one ever heard or if they did they have long forgotten. You need to remember that Nashville was going through their “We think we are “Pop” producers” during this period so they will be soaked down with “Strings” and the “Thousand Screaming Angels” background vocals. All you have to do on your recording is drop all that trendy bells and whistles production and replace the “A” Strings with one steel guitar track and you can come up with a great new recording.

The one thing when it comes to songs, you will learn, is that the better the song is to begin with the easier and cheaper it will be to promote the record. Keep this in mind when looking for songs.
