Billy Yates may be
best known as a hit songwriter, having written songs for some of Country
Music's best including: GEORGE STRAIT, KENNY CHESNEY, SARA EVANS, JOE
NICHOLS, JOHN MICHAEL MONTGOMERY, DAVID ALLAN COE, RICKY VAN SHELTON,
RICOCHET, DARYLE SINGLETARY, TRACY LAWRENCE, JEFF BATES, DOUG STONE, OAK
RIDGE BOYS and GARY ALLAN, not to mention the GEORGE JONES' classic, "I
Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair" and his Grammy-winning smash, "Choices".
Billy Yates is also one fine Honky Tonk singer! After a string of
disappointing efforts at a number of labels including his most recent major
label outing on Columbia Records and with seven CD's to his credit,
including his latest "THAT'S WHY I RUN", Yates currently records for his
own, M.O.D. (My Own Damn) Record Label and tours Europe extensively where
he also dominates the airplay charts there with his smooth honky tonk style
of traditional country music.
In addition to being a hit
songwriter and singer, the Doniphan, Missouri native also serves as
GM/Partner at Smokin' Grapes Music Publishing in Nashville which he
co-founded with Scott Hacker two years ago. His day to day responsibilities
there include overseeing the careers of 5 other songwriters including Wil
Nance, Billy Ryan, David Kroll and singing/writing duo the Broussards.

Lonnie's
"Spotlight
Song"
This
is a song I wrote with Shawn Camp http://www.shawncamp.com/ many
years ago before he got a major record deal or had written all the hit
songs that were to be in his future. A couple of interesting
stories about the song are that Shawn said every time he ran into Trisha
Yearwood she would make him sing the song and she said it was her favorite
song of his. He also tried to get Warner Reprise to let him put it on
his album and they told him it was too country for Nashville
HA!. I have always thought it told the
story quite well about someone losing the one they loved and almost losing
their mind. Maybe someday this type of song will become popular again
and someone will record it. I have always thought country music fans
still like the real country music so we will see I guess. As always
you are welcome to send your
comments.

Sometimes
I Go As Far
Sometimes I ask about
you in a casual kind of way
If I'm hanging out with friends we knew
back when
Or I might bring up your name talking to a total stranger
But I don't do that often just every now and then.... But then
Sometimes I go as far as dialing our old number
Sometimes
I'll even let you say "Hello" before hanging up
And sometimes I go as
far as almost going crazy
Crazy cause I've gone too far pretending
we're in love
Sometimes I'll sleep all night without dreamin of
you
But nights like that are few and far between
Mornings when
I'm half asleep I'll pour two cups of coffee
But that ain't even half
as crazy as it seems.... Then
Sometimes I go as far as dialing
our old number
Sometimes I'll even let you say "Hello" before hanging
up
Then sometimes I go as far as almost going crazy
Crazy cause
I've gone too far pretending we're in love
Tag: I wonder just how far
I'll go pretending we're in love

Looking outside your own
songwriting for
songs
I see so many CD's that look good and sound good but after listening
to them you can't remember one of the songs a week later. This is
because of the songs chosen. They seem to be a watered down version
of whatever is popular at the moment. Most of the problem is the
original idea behind the songs say nothing new. Most of these
songs either say "I Love You And I Am Happy" or
"I Lost You And I Am Sad" and they do not say it as
well as Carrie Underwood or Alan Jackson just finished saying it on their
last albums.
Remember when you
are picking your songs that the better the song the cheaper it is to
promote it. If you wrote a song that is kind of like the last Tim
McGraw single why would a music fan want to buy it when they can have
the Tim McGraw song ? You need to be honest with
yourself.
Think of all the
country artists that have worked for years off the strength of one "Hit"
song. Everyone knows that Dave Dudley sang "Six Days On The Road" and
that Billy Ray Cyrus sang "Achy Breaky Heart" now try to name me
another song they sang ? I can't and I have been in the music
business most of my life. Would you rather music fans think of you as
the artist that had a monster "Hit" or as the singer that wrote every one
of the songs on all of their albums but the fans don't remember the
title to any of your songs.
It is pretty easy
to tell if you are writing songs that are potential "Hits". Has
anyone other than you ever "Cut" one of your songs. Now that is an
honest question you need to ask yourself if you are serious about cutting a
CD that someone may want to buy. "If I am such a good songwriter why
am I the only one who wants to cut my song"
?
Why not pick out 3 or 4 of
the songs you wrote and use them on your next CD and go outside your own
catalog for the other 6 or 7. If you really are the next Kris
Kristofferson you still have your songs for the next CD and you will by
then have the whole world clamoring for more of your original songs if you
really are writing hits. I am betting this ain't gonna happen but you
will still have 6 or 7 other songs on your CD that are gonna probably
be pretty good songs because you are going to be a lot more critical of
other writers than you ever will be of yourself. This makes for a
stronger CD and remember it is still YOUR CD and you get the money when one
of them sells. I always remember the truth in the statment Erin Hay
made "Let those songwriters and publishers have their 9 cents, I'll take
the $12.95 for the CD sell." That pretty much sums up why I believe
it is to a singers advantage to look beyond their own songwriting and
try to find a song that will help them sell their
album.

Mike Anderson is busy as a beaver practicing for
several upcoming Gigs. These are some of his major gigs: May,
Partners for Parks, Black Tie and Blue Jeans
Ball, then July, the City of
Lakewood's Concert in the
Park and in Spanaway for a private party at
the LeMay House. In August, Mike plays
every year for good friend's Bill an Debbie Gurner's annual party,
Music in the Country where a poor piggy
bites the dust and hits the barbeque with Bill's famous Brisket and
Ribs and a great time is had by all. Of course there will be
some other gigs but these are the major ones and since the venue for each
of these events vary from Country to Country/50's, practice is ongoing and
fun!
Mike's "Agent" Marianne is nearing knee
replacement so the household is in a fervor getting ready for her to be
laid up for awhile. The wild teen with raging hormones continues to try
Grandpa Mike and Grandma Marianne's patience but is still fun to have
around.

www.myspace.com/lancewtooheylyrics Hi Lonnie and hi to all your readers...
I'm an Aussie
based lyricist seeking music writers. At the moment I am in collaboration
with a couple of your countrymen, Teresa Sawyer and Lonnie Good,
two extremely talented and beautiful people who have helped me over the
past few months and who have added music to a few of my pieces.
Teresa
especially, has seemed to "click" with my lyrics and one of our pieces
"Take Me Home" an Aussie feel song has been on the radio over here and I
received great feedback as to her "feeling and expressing" the Aussie
spirit of this song.
Over the past few months I have inundated Teresa
and Lonnie with lyrics, so much so they have an awful lot of backlog...they
need help....smile...
If there are any writers out there interested in
looking up my site and having a listen and a read of a few of my blogs
(lyrics) checkout the above website and give me a call.....
Thank you
Lonnie for this opportunity in seeking out help, it is truly
appreciated....Lance:)

The month of May is on its way, but here in
Central Oregon we had snow today! What a funny
"spring" we have had so far...
There are some signs of it, though, like the aspen tree I can see outside
my office window with tender green buds, bravely swaying in the
wind... Hold on, little buds, warmer temps are surely coming soon, I
hope! So, now you know the
weather from here. Ha! Okay,
last month I announced my new
MySpace website http://www.myspace.com/lindygravelle
and this month I'd like to let you know that I'm now also on YouTube too!
Go to: http://www.youtube.com, type my
name in the search toolbar and 6 videos will pop up that I am associated
with as a songwriter or performer of! In fact, an aspiring new artist named
Gina Michaells has a video there of her singing Somebody's
Angel, a song that I co-wrote in Nashville several
years ago with my old buddy, Lonnie Ratliff. Gina's video has been viewed a
whopping 1,591,507 times as of today! I'm
waiting to find out if I'm due any royalties for that!! Ha! Anyway, that's about it from the "what's new"

Well,
Lonnie, we've been fairly busy. We did a couple of jobs with a friend of
ours at senior citizens centers.
We
attended a bowling tournament, and banquet, where we sold a few
cd's.
We attended a wedding and sang for
that. We are attending two weddings in
June.
A friend of ours took one of our
cd's and auctioned it off as a fund raiser, and, would you believe, got $53
for it.
That's going to do it for this
time. Bixby says hi. Don't forget to save us some

POWERFUL RANGY VOICE DOING
GREAT ORIGINAL COUNTRY. Songs about real people and real
life sung with power and emotion. Songs to make you
laugh
cry,
or feel romantic. Some are happy
some
are heartbreaking, some are just fun to listen to. Music that
affirms that we are all connected. Hopefully it is just what you
need to hear when you hear it.
Gordon Ellis grew up in New York
City--not exactly the country music capital of the world. Early musical
influences included the vocal styles of rangy voiced artists like Roy
Orbison
Elvis,
and Jay Black (of Jay and the Americans). He began writing songs in
his teens but was too shy at the time to share them
with anyone. His first group
THE FORTUNES,
did rock and folk cover tunes.
While attending the
University of Oklahoma where he obtained a B.A. in
Psychology he was drawn to the honesty and simplicity of country
music picking up influences of artists like Ray
Price
and Johnny Bush, and even
Conway Twitty
and Glen Campbell,
among others. There, he performed as part of a duo
around campus occasionally throwing in an original song. After
college Gordon moved to the San Francisco Bay
area more for his own personal growth
than for music, but it was there that
he began perfecting his songwriting and performing skills. He performed on
the streets of Fisherman’s Wharf for tips as a duo in
coffeehouses
and later, with his own
country band GORDON ELLIS & the All Night
Ramblers doing mostly originals. While living in
California Gordon was a male vocal finalist in the Nashville
Talent Search held at the famous Saddlerack night
club hosted by Bill Anderson and televised throughout
the San Jose and San Francisco area. He was also featured on the Bay Area
TV show Sidewalks which spotlighted local talent. During this
time Gordon won several songwriting awards and a vocal
performance award in the Music City Song Festival. He also hosted an open
mic for the Northern California Songwriters Association. After much
encouragement Gordon moved to Nashville in 1990. Since
then he has performed extensively around the Nashville writers
club circuit including the Bluebird Cafe
Douglas Corner, The Hall Of Fame
Lounge and The Commodore Lounge. He was featured on the Viacom
TV show Writers Night in 1990 and has been the featured
artist/writer at numerous writers nights over the years
most recently, sharing the stage with Razzy
Bailey at The French Quarter. Gordon has had numerous songs published and a
number of songs recorded by independent artists
including most recently, Bluegrass singer Marci
Salyer Irish country singer Bernadette
Kristin Randsell,
Danny
Mack, and the Canadian group Steele Heart. He has his own
publishing company
Gordel Music,
and recently released his first cd
“MEMORY MACHINE”, on his own
label Optimum Records. Cuts from this cd have been played on
radio stations in the United States
Europe,
Australia,
and New Zeland. He also has a two song EP available called “One
God/One Family”. In July
2003,
Gordon did a one hour telephone interview with Mark Lindsay of
wdyn.net Dynamic Independent Radio in Rochester N.Y. where Mark
played most of the cd and talked with Gordon about his music.
Gordon Ellis does not sound like your typical country artist but
with a strong voice powered by a three octave
range he sings his songs with passion and conviction--songs that
are catchy and memorable--songs about real people
real feelings, real life. When you get right down
to it that’s what country music is supposed to be
about isn't it! For more information about Gordon go

Since that time, she has continued to perform locally in the Dallas area at

Message
from Lonnie about the GOSSIP SECTION - You can E Mail me your gossip
anytime. (I just save it in a file until I make up the next
NEWSLETTER)
Just
send me an E Mail with 2 or 3 sentences and you can include
your website and E Mail if you like. Try to make it
interesting enough people will want to read it. Don't have to be about
music just something that is happening to you. If it looks like you
may have thought about what you wrote for at least 30 seconds I
will probably include it in the next Newsletter which means your website
LINK will go out to over 4,300 people that are in
the country music business. If it looks like you are obviously just
using the gossip section for free advertisment I probably will skip over
it. Heck folks most of us claim to be writers so we should be able to
write 2 or 3
sentences.
Make
sure you put GOSSIP in the subject line of your E Mail when you send it so
it don't get
lost.

I
started writing a book called "Wordweaver" a while back about my
experiences coming from a sharecropper peanut farm in Pushmataha County,
Oklahoma to Music Row in Nashville. It is slow going and I am
learning to have a whole lot of respect for those writers that can keep
their butts stuck to a chair and grind it out page after page. I
thought I would post one of the chapters here in the Newsletter in hopes
that it would get me inspired enough to get back to it soon. Hope you
enjoy
.
It was 1954, I was six years old and in the first grade at Sugar
Loaf School which was six miles west of Antlers, Oklahoma, on the Miller
Road, literally on the line on the map between the colors that indicate the
Ozarks to the east and the Great Plains to the west.
We were living out in the
country and share cropping peanuts on Miss Melton’s place. It was in
the fall and everyone was starting to thrash their peanuts. It took a
pretty good crew of people to run a stationary thrasher, and my dad and mom
were working on Terry Don Pfaff’s thrashing crew helping thrash other
farmer’s peanuts and trading out their labor so Terry Don would come
thrash our peanut crop. This barter system was a pretty common practice in
Southeast Oklahoma where no one had any
money.
My mom had told me that day
when I came home from school they would probably still be in the peanut
fields but not to worry because they would be home soon, and she would
leave some cookies for me on the table. That all sounded fine to me at the
time, so I didn’t have a worry to my soul that day when I headed off
to school.
Sure enough, when I got home
from school there was no one there, but the cookies were right there on the
table like my mom had promised, so all was well in my six-year-old
world.
I remember that after I ate
a couple of the cookies, saving some for later, I made a point of changing
out of my school clothes into my play clothes.
At this time I was feeling
pretty grownup, being all alone at the house, so I found some old leftover
cornbread in the kitchen and took it outside, called the chickens and
crumbled it up and spread it on the ground for them to eat. We didn’t
have a pen for our chickens, so they just ran around the place, always
looking for food and we, in turn, were always running around the place
looking for where the chickens hid their nests if we wanted to have any
eggs.
I was pretty much enjoying
my situation of being all alone at the house and feeling much more mature
than my six years due to all the responsibility that had been laid upon my
tiny shoulders. If my Mom and Dad had shown up during this well lit
envelope of time, everything would have been just fine, but sometimes fate
can rock the boat, and fate was arriving quickly with the setting of that
Oklahoma sun, and my little boat was heading directly into the dark storm.
I remember Mom saying they
would be home before dark and since it was not really dark yet I kept
telling myself to not worry; they should be home any minute.
It was right about this time
I started telling myself I wasn’t scared and that I had nothing to
worry about and trying my best to convince myself that that was true. As
the sun dropped lower and it grew darker this would become a pretty hard
sell for my run away imagination.
I remember that I was as
worried about my parents and thinking that one of them may have gotten
hurt. Working around a peanut thrashing machine was pretty dangerous work,
and I was able to create some pretty gruesome scenarios that would have
done the future novels of Stephen King proud.
Like I said, my first thoughts were for my
parents’ safety, but I didn’t have to dwell on them very long
before I started to think about myself, and the darker it got the more
scared I became.
I knew my parents would be coming home, that
is, if they were ever coming home again, from the west up the dirt road
that ran by our house. They had taken our wagon and team to Terry
Don’s to be used to haul peanuts from the fields to the thrashing
machine and, since we did not have a car, that would be how they got
home.
I decided I would walk down
the road to the top of the hill in the direction they would be arriving and
I could see way down the road as soon as I got to the top of the hill about
a hundred yards west of our
house.
I called my dog as I set out
toward the top of the hill where I could get a good view down the road and
figured I would see our wagon when I got there. It was a pretty big
disappointment as I topped the hill with no wagon in sight, and there was
no doubt now that it was definitely getting darker by the minute. I stood
there at the top of the hill for as long as I could see anything down the
road, then I called my dog, and one dejected scared little boy turned for
home.
Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, I heard
something rustle in the woods off to the side of the road and away ran my
dog to chase whatever demon it was out there lurking in the dark. That was
the last I would see of my dog for the night, and it was one sad , lonesome
little boy that walked the last few steps back to the most scary house in
Pushmataha county.
When I walked in the door I
realized I was no better in the house than I was outside, because it was
darker in there than it was outside. We did not have electricity, and I had
been warned more than once not to ever touch the kerosene lamps we used for
light. I had enough sense, even at six years old, to know that trying to
light the kerosene lamp was way too dangerous, and I could end up burning
the house down or breaking the thin glass lamp globes and cutting myself,
plus I was not even sure I knew how to light one, anyway.
Instead of just sitting
there in the dark, I crawled up on my mom and dad’s bed and buried my
face in my mom’s pillow and just started crying and hoping I could go
to sleep and wake up and my mom and dad would be there and my world would
be right again. Unfortunately my story was to get a lot worse before it got
better. Just as I was about to drift off to sleep I heard something
underneath the bed, and, by this time, I was so scared I was way beyond
reason, and I knew it was bound to be a rattlesnake.
I lay there with my head
buried in my mom’s pillow too scared to move but knowing somehow I
had to get off the bed and out of the house before this imagined
rattlesnake bit me. It got quiet underneath the bed and I decided to make
my move. I eased to the foot of the bed and jumped out to the middle of the
floor and headed for the front door. When I got to the front door I opened
it then looked back to see my little kitten coming out from under the bed
where the rattlesnake was. I scooped him up and headed outside. It would be a couple more days
before I even thought of the possibility that Kitty was probably the
“rattlesnake” under mom’s bed.
It didn’t seem quite
as dark now after my ordeal inside the house, so I hung on tightly to my
kitten and heard my dog barking out in the woods. I was pretty disappointed
with the dog’s loyalty, but I sure was wishing I had just a little
bit of his courage right now.
I headed down toward the barn and crawled up on the pole fence
making sure I didn’t let Kitty get away. Our old milch cow, Roz,
lifted up her head from the empty feed trough like she thought I would have
the answers as to who was gonna feed and milk her.
I felt a little better now
sitting here on the fence surrounded by Roz and Kitty, and, for a while, I
just sat there quietly, but
that feeling did not last long. I got to thinking about how hopeless
everything was for me and missing my parents so bad I just couldn’t
hold back the tears, and I just kept petting the little cat and wondering
what was gonna happen to me.
I finally stopped crying and just sat there quietly watching the
world turn black. I am not sure how long I sat on the corral, probably
closer to fifteen minutes than the lifetime it seemed at the time, but then
the silence and darkness was broken by a car headed up to our house from
the East. I remember the last awful thought I would have that night was
that someone was coming to tell me something bad had happened to my
parents.
As the car drew closer I saw
that it was Terry Don’s old Chevrolet and when they stopped and
opened the door the car’s interior light light up the most beautiful
sight I had ever seen in my life. There was my mom getting out of the car
and right behind her was my dad.
I was so relieved I almost
started to cry again and when my mom called out “Lonnie!,” my
voice broke when I hollered back, “I’m down at the
corral.”
I started to put the kitten
down ‘cause I knew they would know I had been scared if they saw me
hanging on to it, but then I remembered how I felt when my dog had deserted
me earlier tonight, so I just held on to the cat and petted it so he would
know how much I appreciated his loyalty, and I was not about to caste him
away now that everything was okay.
Mom came down to the corral
and climbed up on the fence and sat real close to me and started to explain
how they had had to work much later than they ever expected, and they had
left the team at Terry Don’s and had him drive them home so they
could get back to me as soon as they possibly could. I told her it was okay
. She took out her handkerchief and wiped my face. She asked me if I had
been crying, and I said “A little bit.” She hugged me a little tighter and
said “Me too,” and we both sat there on the corral and petted
the cat
together.

Artists shopping for a
record deal.
I guess
one of the most asked guestions in the world has to be "How do I go about
getting a record deal". Well that is pretty easy to answer. No one
knows. Every deal is different. I do know that you have to do a
few things to increase the odds of a label paying any attention to
you. You need a photo, a demo and a bio.
Once you have those if you start to get some interest you will have
something that represents you and your little package can get passed around
to people who might be able to help you.
Photos are
simple enough. There's lots of people out there in the world that can
take a decent photo so find one. Just use common sense and make sure
the photo represents you.
The demo
can be a simple clean version of you singing the Star Spangled Banner or
Amazing Grace but if you can't sing it better than it has ever been sung
before you may want to spend a few bucks on a little more advanced
demo. If you can find you an original song that sounds like it could
be the next "Jesus Take The Wheel" you will have moved yourself to the
front of the line when it comes to getting a record deal.
The last thing
is a one page bio. Show some creativity here in the one
phase of getting a record deal that don't cost you a dime. If
you are going to try to tell some label you think you can write songs
remember they are going to read your bio and if it sounds like 99% of the
bios on MYSPACE and starts out with how you started singing 72 hours BEFORE
you were conceived and you have always dreamed of singing your songs for
the world don't be surprised if they don't believe you are gonna be the
next Kris Kristofferson. Last but not least don't bother people in
the business until you have these 3 basic things a photo, a
demo and a
bio.
