 Jack Greene

Jack Greene (born January 7, 1930) is an American country musician nicknamed the "Jolly Green Giant" and well known for his 1966 hit "There Goes My Everything."

Early Career

Greene was born on January 7, 1930, in Maryville, Tennessee. In the early 1950's, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he formed his own band, The Peach Tree Boys as a lead vocalist, drummer, and guitarist. In 1959, he moved back to Tennessee and settled in Nashville and formed his own band, The Tennessee Mountain Boys. One day in 1961, the band opened for Ernest Tubb, and Ernest noticed Jack's talents and asked him to join his band, which he did. For the next few years, he was a drummer, guitarist, vocalist, and M.C. in Ernest Tubb's band, The Texas Troubadors. He soon was starting to open shows for Ernest playing guitar and singing and in 1964, Jack released his first solo record with "The Last Letter" which first appeared on one of Tubb's live albums. The song got attention from Ernest's record label Decca Records who released it as a single. Another single followed in 1965 with "Don't You Ever Get Tired Of Hurtin' Me" but this didn't chart as it came out at the same time as Ray Price's version. Tubb encouraged him to pursue a solo career, and Greene achieved great success right away. His first Top 40 hit came in early 1966 with "Ever Since My Baby Went Away". Later that year, he released a song that put him on top. The song was "There Goes My Everything" and it was a monster hit, staying on top of the Country charts for 7 weeks, and even becoming a crossover hit, the album stayed #1 for an entire year. The success continued into 1967 as well with another number 1 smash in "All The Time" (on top for 5 weeks) and a number 2 hit with "What Locks The Door". In 1967, he received the prestigious awards for Male Vocalist of the Year, Single of the Year, and Album of the Year from the Country Music Association. In all, he has recorded nine number one country hits on various charts including 5 number one Billboard hits. His success continued into 1968 with another number 1 with "You Are My Treasure" and the top 5 hit "Love Takes Care Of Me". In 1969, he had 2 number 1 hits with "Until My Dreams Come True" and "Statue Of A Fool". He completed the year out with the Top 5 "Back In The Arms Of Love".

Later Career

In 1970, Jack gained a duet and a touring partner in Jeannie Seely, and together they had a number 2 hit with the song "Wish I Didn't Have To Miss You". Jack and Jeannie's stage show became one of the biggest touring acts during the 1970's. Jack continued to have both solo hits and duets with Jeannie Seely. Among the biggest of these hits during the 70's included "Lord, Is That Me" (1970), "There's A Lot About A Woman A Man Don't Know" (1971), and 2 more duets with Jeannie with "Much Oblige" (1972) and "What In The World Has Gone Wrong With Our Love" (1972). Jack's career continued when Decca became MCA Records and he continued to chart with "Satisfaction" (1973), "I Need Somebody Bad" (1973), and "It's Time To Cross That Bridge" (1974). Afterwards, his chart success declined rapidly as another song in 1974 and one song in 1975 were minor hits and he was dropped by MCA Records in 1976.

Jack enjoyed a brief comeback to the charts in 1980 with the Top 30 hit "Yours For The Taking" on Frontline Records. He achieved several more minor hits on Frontline and then on EMH and Step One. He continues to tour regularly and appears on The Grand Ole Opry, where he has been a member since 1967, and this year marks his 40th anniversary with the Opry.

Greene currently lives in Nashville, Tennessee, where he regularly performs at the Grand Ole Opry.

Land of the Free
CD Baby’s Derek Sivers lets us in on a little secret… CD sales by indie artists are still growing.
By Andre Calilhanna | January 2008
“CD Baby is a little online record store that sells albums by independent musicians.” At least that’s how the CD Baby website describes it. Founded by Derek Sivers in 1997, the “little online record store” currently has over 200,000 artists selling music through the site, has sold nearly four million albums, and has paid close to $65 million directly to independent artists. The company began as a hobby for Sivers, who was a full-time musician at the time. Soon, he was selling CDs of friends and fellow musicians, and before long, CD Baby blossomed into a full-fledged online enterprise.

Today, Sivers is regarded as an icon in the indie music community, and in 2003, he was awarded the World Technology Award for Entertainment (the same was awarded to Napster founder Shawn Fanning in 2001). In 2004, CD Baby added digital download sales to its growing list of online offerings, and Sivers has long been a regular fixture on the music conference/speaker circuit. FastForward caught up with Derek to get his take on the state on independent music as we head into the new year.

How have you stayed relevant? As more and more players enter the online marketplace, how have you maintained your status as the #1 independent CD retailer?
Are we #1? Really? Cool! WHOO-HOO! We're #1!!

No really, we just stay focused on selling music. That's all. No advertising. No investors. No distractions. And we've been around for 10 years now, and have paid over $50 million directly to musicians. We're getting good at this.

What do you see as the most interesting developments in music over the last six to 12 months? Particularly as they relate to independent music.
The more things change, the more they stay the same, y'know?

Companies everywhere are experimenting with "what's the new model of the music industry?" But of course, musicians making great music with an interesting angle are still getting attention, and people are still buying more music than ever, but through lots of different sources now, which works in the independent musician's favor.

It's dizzying to think you have to stay on top of all of it, but honestly I don't think you do. Just focus on your music, make as much music as you can, and let the less-creative mouse-clickers of the world stay on top of the new companies launching every week.

What about in the music industry? What strikes you as most interesting or most telling about what's happening in the industry these days?
Working at a label is the most insecure job on earth right now. Being signed to a label is the next-most-insecure thing. Being a completely independent musician has more job security than either of them.

With the ascendance of digital downloads, are CDs still relevant for indie artists?
Despite what you hear in big media about CD sales dropping for big artists like Beyoncé and Eminem, CD sales down here on the indie level are actually UP 35% over last year! Yes, even physical CDs. (Downloads are up, too.) So next time you hear someone moaning about how "nobody's buying CDs anymore," remind them that's just the big-media-star artists. The displaced sales are spreading out to the indies, who are doing better than ever.

Disc Makers clients are smart to keep manufacturing CDs! Especially at live performances, if people love your music, a great CD is still the most convenient way to go. Then if they want it on their iPod as well, they can just stick it in their computer and transfer it, but having the CD gives them that choice to play your music everywhere.

It's a shame when someone says, "Oh we're not going to make CDs anymore. It's too expensive." But by saying that, they've just excluded 90% of their potential audience who is not the always-online broadband iTunes-purchasing iPod types.

What tips do you have for someone signing up for CD Baby for the first time?
Words matter. Read my articles at
http://www.cdbaby.net/words. It's important to describe your music in an enticing way that makes strangers want to hear it. People see the words before they hear the music.

Other than that, make sure to go proudly announce your CD is for sale, as soon as it's up! Most musicians get too shy to ask people to buy.

Catering exclusively to artists who are basically unknown, who have no marketing or publicity budget, trying to reach buyers in a marketplace teeming with options... it just doesn't sound like a recipe for success. Were you thinking these thoughts as CD Baby was getting off the ground?
Nah. I never meant to start a company. It was never about CD Baby. I don't care about CD Baby. I care about my fellow musicians, and always will do whatever I can to help them, whether it's profitable or not.

And now? What's the breadth of CD Baby? How do HostBaby and PromoBaby fit in?
Same thing: just doing whatever I can to help. A lot of my musician clients had out-of-date websites, so as I was helping them with that, and it accidentally became HostBaby. Now I've noticed that most of my musician clients need help promoting, so I've set up PromoBaby to try to help them with that.

What has surprised you most about the success of CD Baby?
This was supposed to be a hobby! The whole thing is a surprise!

Can you give us any insight as to new/future developments happening at CD Baby?
More international. By the time you read this, the CD Baby site will be in 9 languages, and we're going to be setting up offices in a few countries around the world. This will help Disc Makers clients get their music out to more places, easier. Already 30% of our orders go overseas, but this should definitely double it.

What do you find most disappointing, or most encouraging about the independent music scene?
What's encouraging is that musicians are in a better place than ever. Think back only 10 years ago where if you had recorded an album, there was nowhere to sell it but your shows! Unless you were going to have a "send a check or money order to..." instructions on your mailing list flyers.

Now dozens of companies around the world want to sell your music, no matter who you are, no questions asked, no judgment passed. Independent artists on a level playing field with the majors at Apple iTunes, Amazon, and many other outlets. It's amazing!

The only disappointing thing is the moaning: the artists who try to blame anyone but themselves for their lack of success, and don't realize the incredible power they have at their fingers. Their creativity is their greatest strength, and creativity doesn't cost a thing.

Message from Lonnie about the GOSSIP SECTION - You can E Mail me your gossip anytime. (I just save it in a file until I make up the next NEWSLETTER)
Just send me an E Mail with 2 or 3 sentences and you can include your website and E Mail if you like.  Try to make it interesting enough people will want to read it. Don't have to be about music just something that is happening to you.  If it looks like you may have thought about what you wrote for at least 30 seconds I will probably include it in the next Newsletter which means your website LINK will go out to over 4,200 people that are in the country music business.  If it looks like you are obviously just using the gossip section for free advertisment I probably will skip over it.  Heck folks most of us claim to be writers so we should be able to write 2 or 3 sentences.

Make sure you put GOSSIP in the subject line of your E Mail when you send it so it don't get lost.

Hi Lonnie!  I've been hiding out! I've been giving myself a break to concentrate  on learning guitar songs like Stairway to Heaven and Teardrops on My
Guitar! I love picking better than strumming and I have an awesome guitar teacher who is teaching me how to play great picking songs.
I've also been preparing for a couple of great shows. I'll be performing a 1/2 hr. show at the Ajax, Ontario "Bell Walk for Kids  Help Phone", raising money for and encouraging kids to ask for help when they really need someone to talk to. I'm also preparing to play my guitar and sing at a couple of places near Nashville, Tennessee in  June 2008, during the week of the CMA Festival. Thanks for including me in your Newsletter! Hopefully we'll run into  each other again real soon!

Work In Progress

This is a song I am working on with country singer Mike Anderson.  http://www.myspace.com/mikeandersonandthecountrydrifters
One of the few lyrics I have ever written using the cowboy as a central figure.  I think we have managed to convey the story of an old
cowboy reflecting back on his life and seems to be all and all pretty satisfied with it.

The Cowboys Last Message

The cattle are quiet now there's peace in the valley
One lonesome coyote howls through the night
A cowboy stands watch, the cattle are lowing
It's a time for reflecting looking back on his life

He's lived his lifetime by the code of the cowboy
He's a Western desciple of the cowboy way
He's put things in order for his last final roundup
And he's  leavin'  this message before he rides away

       (Chorus)
Here's to the ones riding behind me
Keep your powder dry and your eye on the trail
There's a right and a wrong way for each choice we're makin'
And sometimes the right way will be a hard sell

He's ain't leaving behind no worldly treasures
Just looking for a way to say I've been here
And there was more to my life than a bed in the bunkhouse
I leave an untarnished memory and a message that's clear

       (Chorus)
Here's to the ones riding behind me
Keep your powder dry and your eye on the trail
There's a right and a wrong way for each choice we're makin'
And sometimes the right way will be a hard sell

      Recording Artists

Lonnie’s Economy Recording Music Package

Check out my little side business. For you artists that can’t afford the time or money to come to Nashville to record right now or just need a song or two to finish out your CD or to put up on MYSPACE etc! - I have a website of songs I own the Master Recording on and I can lease you the track and furnish you with a Mechanical license so you are 100% legal for $250 - The only catch is that you have to be able to sing them in the key they are recorded in so just go to the website to find out. They are much like the Karaoke tracks you buy except most of them are original songs but not all of them and you will have a Mechanical License giving you the right to use the songs. You can pay for these tracks with your credit card if you prefer. I then mail you a CD with the music track and you just take it into your local recording studio and add your vocals and harmony and you got it. If this sounds like something you may be interested in just go to my website below and see if there is anything you like there that is in your key. I have most of the Lyrics posted. Just “Click” on lyrics to see them. Any questions just E Mail me NashvilleShowcase@comcast.net

Visit my website to see what songs are available

Where You're Concerned
.
.
"Can we still be friends" is a question that has been around as long as people have been falling in love and falling out of love.  With this song "Where You're Concerned" I played around with the idea that yes, you could be friends just because you had been so close that you would always worry about how the other person was getting along.  Of course there is always the possibility that the singer is still in love and wants to remain involved in the former lovers life in any small way possible.  I guess you can let it mean whatever you want it to.
.
.
"Where You're Concerned"
(Lonnie Ratliff )

     (Chorus)
Where you're concerned I'll always be concerned
It don't matter how many bridges that you think we've burned
And even though I know you look at me as another lesson learned
Where you're concerned I'll always be concerned

(Verse)
I know that you don't understand when I call from time to time
And considering we've said goodbye I guess you think I'm out of line
But I'm not looking to rekindle some old flame out of the past
I just need to know that you're alright now is that too much to ask

     (Chorus)

(Inst.)

(Bridge)

So if I call you on your birthday or send a Christmas card this year
Don't look for some hiding meaning it only means that I still care

     (Chorus)

     TAG:
Where you're concerned I'll always be concerned

CD Frisbee

This is what you call an "Insider Song" about the music business.  In this case a songwriter.  Writing this kind of song is no way to get rich but they sure can be a lot of fun.  Wrote this with

Julie Taylor http://www.julitaylor.com/

 and

Luther Lewis  http://www.myspace.com/lutherlewismusic

Hopefully if you have ever put pen to paper this song will bring a smile to your face or maybe even if you are not a songwriter but just have a bunch of weird friends you can relate to it..

"CD Frisbee"

(Lonnie Ratliff/Julie Bolton/Luther Lewis)

Well I wrote myself a hit song
That could make a statue cry
I've been workin at McDonald's
To pay for recording time

Well I called in all my favors
I counted all my change
Than I went and made a record
Of my epic song of pain.

I had a listening party

Shared my music and my wine

That's when my hit fell victim
To those drunken friends of mine
(I couldn't believe my eyes)

Chorus:

They're playing CD Frisbee with my hit
Makes this ole country singer
Wanna give up and quit
I can't believe my so-called friends
Would stoop as low as this

They're playing CD Frisbee with my hit

I know it's hard to believe
My story sad but true
They took my only #1
Now I feel like #2

CHORUS
