"Spotlight Artist" Stonewall Jackson
Stonewall Jackson Lonnie Ratliff's comments "In 1965 every Junior in the Antlers, Oklahoma High School system was a big fan of this new group from England called the Beatles except for (1) one lone exception who proudly declared his allegiance to Stonewall Jackson. I assume you all can figure out just who was the big "Stonewall" fan."
Stonewall Jackson (born in Tabor City, North Carolina November 6, 1932) is an American country singer and musician who achieved his greatest fame during country's golden honky tonk era in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He was named after the famous general, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, who was an ancestor. His most popular song was "Waterloo" in 1959. The song is a haunting and catchy tune that states that "Everybody has to meet his Waterloo," meaning their fate or comeuppance. The song cites Adam, Napoleon and Tom Dooley as examples. Jackson was the first to join the Grand Ole Opry before he got a recording contract. He signed to Columbia Records and debuted in 1958 with "Don't Be Angry." The song didn't score in the country music top 40, but it got him recognition. His breakthrough came in the country Top 40 in late 1958, with a song written by a young George Jones, "Life to Go." It peaked at #2 in early 1959 and his follow-up record, "Waterloo," was #1 for 5 weeks and crossed over into the Top 40 Pop charts, where it reached #4. His next #1 came in 1964, with "B.J. The D.J." (about an over-worked country music radio station DJ, who crashes his car in a rainstorm because of bad tires). Jackson was the first to record a live record from the Grand Ole Opry, in 1963 with "Old Showboat."Other classics include "The Carpet On The Floor," "Why I'm Walkin'," "A Wound Time Can't Erase" and "I Washed My Hands in Muddy Water." Jackson also recorded a cover of Lobo's 1971 hit, "Me and You and a Dog Named Boo." From 1958 to 1971, Jackson had 35 Top 40 Country Hits. Along with Ray Price, Jackson is considered a cornerstone, after Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell, in the hard-driving honky tonk sound in the late 50's and early 60's. In 2006, Jackson sued the Grand Ole Opry for $10 million, claiming age discrimination. As a member of the Opry for over fifty years, Jackson believed that management was sidelining him in favor of younger artists. In his court filing, Jackson claimed that Grand Ole Opry general manager Pete Fisher stated that he didn't "want any gray hairs on that stage or in the audience, and before I'm done there won't be any." Fisher is also alleged to have told Jackson that he was "too old and too country." "Click" the yellow speaker below to listen to Stonewall

Some things you need to be aware of as an
Independent Country Artist. If you have a CD
for sell and you are serious about online sells then it has to be on
CDBABY (www.CDBABY.com) This costs
you $35 but if you are going to sell anything online this is your best
bet. This is one of those website you pretty much need to be on and
there's no way around it. Every time anyone hears you on the radio
and wants to buy your CD the first place they go to look for it is CDBABY
if you are an indie artist. MYSPACE
(Free) - There are over 225 MILLION websites on MYSPACE. It is
free and if you are willing to put a little effort into it you can probably
make a living from this one website. If you are one of those artists
that just like to stick your music up anywhere you can and then just sit
around waiting for something to happen this place won't be of any value to
you but if you network it a little everyday there is no limit to what you
can do here. YouTube
(Free) - Unlimited potential with YouTube. You can make some
decent SlideShows here just using the MovieMaker that is already in your
computer. Here's 26 SlideShows I made and put up on
YouTube http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=nashvilleshowcase&p=r i - Tunes
(Free) - This is a website I use a lot. You have to go there
and download their little program http://www.apple.com/itunes/overview/ This is the easiest way to keep up with what kind
of music is out there. If you need to learn the latest Alan Jackson
or Carrie Underwood single so you can sing it at your next gig just go to
i-Tunes and buy it for 99 cents instead of having to buy the whole
album. Here's another good use for it. If there is another
indie artist you keep seeing on the Charts and you wonder why they are
doing better than you are just go buy one or two downloads of their music
and listen to what they are recording and you may be able to figure it out
and adjust what you have been doing and be a little more
successful.

Progress This song was pretty
much inspired by the out of control lifestyle I have been seeing on T.V. of
Britney Spears. We watch these people who seem to have everything in
the world and it seems like their lifestyle is set on self
destruct. I just went back through
history and based the lyrics very loosely on
Marilyn
Monroe http://www.marilynmonroe.com/about/bio.html ,
JonBenet Ramsey
http://www.crimelibrary.com/notorious_murders/famous/ramsey/index_1.html , Anna Nicole
Smith http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Nicole_Smith and
Britney Spears
http://www.people.com/people/britney_spears . This is one
lyric I tried not to put my own opinion into and just hoped
to tell the story as I have observed it. All of us
just tend to watch this bizarre fairy tale plays itself out time and
time again. Probably not a lot we can do about it anyway. Some
will scratch their head and then declare these American beauties to all be
nut jobs while others will see them as lost souls and will sympathize with
them and forgive their actions no matter what they do. The truth is
probably somewhere in the middle and the spectators are all part of the
game. I think the
lyrics are just about there and Vaughn has already written most of the
melody so hopefully we'll have this one finished
soon. American
Beauty American beauty your life's perfect in every
sense To
those outside looking in it comes at no
expense You've never known the feeling that comes with second
place You've always been a winner with such beauty and such
grace American beauty like a trophy sitting on a
shelf The
part you play shows you know your place and know it
well But
those silent screams of Norma Jean you have come to
share When
all you ever wanted was a love that's just not
there
(Chorus) American Beauty
your true story's never told You'll always be sweet
sixteen you'll never grow old In the eyes of those
who love you for all that you stand
for American beauty they
don't know how sad you are American beauty the spotlight called to
you It
bathed you in its light and it hide you from the
truth And
you danced alone to that demon song only you could
hear Nobody
saw your hurtin' or if they did they didn't
care
(Chorus) American Beauty
your true story's never told You'll always be sweet
sixteen you'll never grow old In the eyes of those
who love you for all that you stand
for American beauty they
don't know how sad you are (Bridge) Then one night you see a light and it's callin'
out to you And you follow it just because you got nothing left to
lose And
those of us you leave behind try to understand but
can't American beauty we thought that you had
everything
(Chorus) American Beauty
your true story's never told You'll always be sweet
sixteen you'll never grow old In the eyes of those

Ghost . . Written with Erin Hay "Hank & Patsy's Ghost"
is a story about a country singer out there singinging in the honky tonks
who has managed to take her profession to its art form where she is not in
it for the money but just for the love of singing. On both the good
nights and bad nights she is able to get into that zone and imagine that
she is just carrying on the tradition and is performing for all those stars
who came before her. We also wrote
another set of lyrics for this song for a male singer where we took out
that "sissy" line about the "makeup" and also changed the title to "Hank
& Lefty's Ghost".. . . Hank &

Jean Wrote this song
with my buddy Tom Mitchell. Used the format where the listener is
just listening in on a conversation between two friends. I have
always thought the way the conversation is so understated and one guy is
just fishing around for information about his long lost love is exactly how
two men would handle the situation. These guys are definately not
sensative metro sexual types and you get the impression that they both
know exactly what the conversation is about but respect each other
enough to just pretend it is only a casual
conversation. . "Click Yellow Speaker" Tom Mitchell singing Did You See Barbara Jean
