"Spotlight Artist"

Stonewall Jackson

 Stonewall Jackson

Lonnie Ratliff's  comments "In 1965 every Junior in the Antlers, Oklahoma High School system was a big fan of this new group from England called the Beatles except for (1) one lone exception who proudly declared his allegiance to Stonewall Jackson.  I assume you all can figure out just who was the big "Stonewall" fan."

Stonewall Jackson (born in Tabor City, North Carolina November 6, 1932) is an American country singer and musician who achieved his greatest fame during country's golden honky tonk era in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He was named after the famous general, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, who was an ancestor.

His most popular song was "Waterloo" in 1959. The song is a haunting and catchy tune that states that "Everybody has to meet his Waterloo," meaning their fate or comeuppance. The song cites Adam, Napoleon and Tom Dooley as examples.

Jackson was the first to join the Grand Ole Opry before he got a recording contract. He signed to Columbia Records and debuted in 1958 with "Don't Be Angry." The song didn't score in the country music top 40, but it got him recognition.

His breakthrough came in the country Top 40 in late 1958, with a song written by a young George Jones, "Life to Go." It peaked at #2 in early 1959 and his follow-up record, "Waterloo," was #1 for 5 weeks and crossed over into the Top 40 Pop charts, where it reached #4. His next #1 came in 1964, with "B.J. The D.J." (about an over-worked country music radio station DJ, who crashes his car in a rainstorm because of bad tires). Jackson was the first to record a live record from the Grand Ole Opry, in 1963 with "Old Showboat."Other classics include "The Carpet On The Floor," "Why I'm Walkin'," "A Wound Time Can't Erase" and "I Washed My Hands in Muddy Water." Jackson also recorded a cover of Lobo's 1971 hit, "Me and You and a Dog Named Boo."

From 1958 to 1971, Jackson had 35 Top 40 Country Hits. Along with Ray Price, Jackson is considered a cornerstone, after Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell, in the hard-driving honky tonk sound in the late 50's and early 60's.

In 2006, Jackson sued the Grand Ole Opry for $10 million, claiming age discrimination. As a member of the Opry for over fifty years, Jackson believed that management was sidelining him in favor of younger artists. In his court filing, Jackson claimed that Grand Ole Opry general manager Pete Fisher stated that he didn't "want any gray hairs on that stage or in the audience, and before I'm done there won't be any." Fisher is also alleged to have told Jackson that he was "too old and too country."

"Washed My Hands In Muddy Water"

Introduction by Roy Acuff

Some things you need to be aware of as an Independent Country Artist.

If you have a CD for sell and you are serious about online sells then it has to be on CDBABY  (www.CDBABY.com)  This costs you $35 but if you are going to sell anything online this is your best bet.  This is one of those website you pretty much need to be on and there's no way around it.  Every time anyone hears you on the radio and wants to buy your CD the first place they go to look for it is CDBABY if you are an indie artist.

MYSPACE (Free) - There are over 225 MILLION websites on MYSPACE.  It is free and if you are willing to put a little effort into it you can probably make a living from this one website.  If you are one of those artists that just like to stick your music up anywhere you can and then just sit around waiting for something to happen this place won't be of any value to you but if you network it a little everyday there is no limit to what you can do here.

YouTube (Free) - Unlimited potential with YouTube.  You can make some decent SlideShows here just using the MovieMaker that is already in your computer.  Here's 26 SlideShows I made and put up on YouTube  http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=nashvilleshowcase&p=r

i - Tunes (Free) -  This is a website I use a lot.  You have to go there and download their little program  http://www.apple.com/itunes/overview/   This is the easiest way to keep up with what kind of music is out there.  If you need to learn the latest Alan Jackson or Carrie Underwood single so you can sing it at your next gig just go to i-Tunes and buy it for 99 cents instead of having to buy the whole album.  Here's another good use for it.  If there is another indie artist you keep seeing on the Charts and you wonder why they are doing better than you are just go buy one or two downloads of their music and listen to what they are recording and you may be able to figure it out and adjust what you have been doing and be a little more successful.

Perley Curtis   www.perleyc.com
has been busy in the studio trying to finish up his new CD.  In the process, he has recorded almost enough songs for two new CDs.  One will definitely be a duet album with his fiancé, Erin Hay.  He is not sure which album will come out first, but it’s looking like the solo album.  It may include one or two duets with Erin as a teaser to the duet album.  Perley has been playing around Nashville at places such as Tootsies with his friend, Larry Hamilton , as well as at the Long Hollow Jamboree on Friday nights with Tresa Street.  He is in the process of putting his band back together, so keep an eye out at www.perleyc.com for future dates and info about the upcoming CD releases.  He has one show confirmed this Summer at the Dover Fair in Maine on August 23rd and is hoping to book more shows around that one.  Perley and Erin will be getting married in Lafayette, TN on June 7, 2008.

Take Grandpa Mike, Grandma Marianne and throw in our latest house guest, a 14 year old grandson with ragin hormones and you got some serious material for a song!  We continue to enjoy our many small dogs though we had to say goodbye to our little Yorkie, Nikki which was sad. On a happier note, It's been close to a year since I recorded my first CD in Nashville. I am currently working with Lonnie on a couple of Cowboy Songs and a song about following my dream.  I am looking forward to my next CD.

Work In Progress

This song was pretty much inspired by the out of control lifestyle I have been seeing on T.V. of Britney Spears.  We watch these people who seem to have everything in the world and it seems like their lifestyle is set on self destruct.
I just went back through history and based the lyrics very loosely on

This is one lyric I tried not to put my own opinion into and just hoped to tell the story as I have observed it.   All of us just tend to watch this bizarre fairy tale plays itself out time and time again.  Probably not a lot we can do about it anyway.  Some will scratch their head and then declare these American beauties to all be nut jobs while others will see them as lost souls and will sympathize with them and forgive their actions no matter what they do.  The truth is probably somewhere in the middle and the spectators are all part of the game.

I think the lyrics are just about there and Vaughn has already written most of the melody so hopefully we'll have this one finished soon.

American Beauty

American beauty your life's perfect in every sense
To those outside looking in it comes at no expense
You've never known the feeling that comes with second place
You've always been a winner with such beauty and such grace

American beauty like a trophy sitting on a shelf
The part you play shows you know your place and know it well
But those silent screams of Norma Jean you have come to share
When all you ever wanted was a love that's just not there

       (Chorus)
American Beauty your true story's never told
You'll always be sweet sixteen you'll never grow old
In the eyes of those who love you for all that you stand for
American beauty they don't know how sad you are

American beauty the spotlight called to you
It bathed you in its light and it hide you from the truth
And you danced alone to that demon song only you could hear
Nobody saw your hurtin' or if they did they didn't care

        (Chorus)
American Beauty your true story's never told
You'll always be sweet sixteen you'll never grow old
In the eyes of those who love you for all that you stand for
American beauty they don't know how sad you are

(Bridge)
Then one night you see a light and it's callin'  out to you
And you follow it just because you got nothing left to lose
And those of us you leave behind try to understand but can't
American beauty we thought that you had everything

       (Chorus)
American Beauty your true story's never told
You'll always be sweet sixteen you'll never grow old
In the eyes of those who love you for all that you stand for
American beauty they don't know how sad you are

      (Tag)
American beauty shining like a distant star
American beauty you'll live on in our hearts

Lonnie’s Economy Recording Music Package

Check out my little side business. For you artists that can’t afford the time or money to come to Nashville to record right now or just need a song or two to finish out your CD or to put up on MYSPACE etc! - I have a website of songs I own the Master Recording on and I can lease you the track and furnish you with a Mechanical license so you are 100% legal for $250 - The only catch is that you have to be able to sing them in the key they are recorded in so just go to the website to find out. They are much like the Karaoke tracks you buy except most of them are original songs but not all of them and you will have a Mechanical License giving you the right to use the songs. You can pay for these tracks with your credit card if you prefer. I then mail you a CD with the music track and you just take it into your local recording studio and add your vocals and harmony and you got it. If this sounds like something you may be interested in just go to my website below and see if there is anything you like there that is in your key. I have most of the Lyrics posted. Just “Click” on lyrics to see them. Any questions just E Mail me NashvilleShowcase@comcast.net

Hank & Patsy's Ghost
.
.
Written with Erin Hay "Hank & Patsy's Ghost" is a story about a country singer out there singinging in the honky tonks who has managed to take her profession to its art form where she is not in it for the money but just for the love of singing.  On both the good nights and bad nights she is able to get into that zone and imagine that she is just carrying on the tradition and is performing for all those stars who came before her.
We also wrote another set of lyrics for this song for a male singer where we took out that "sissy" line about the "makeup" and also changed the title to "Hank & Lefty's Ghost"..

Hank & Patsy's Ghost
(Lonnie Ratliff / Erin Hay)

Grab my makeup from the glovebox
Once again I'm runnin' late
As I rush through the front door
The band is up on stage
They kick off my first song I walk up to the mike
Another chapter in the story of my honky tonk life

Just another night on Broadway
One more would be country star
I ask the burning question
Are the answers in this bar
Well I hang on to my music & hang on to my dream
And the crowd that hangs out here don't know that when I sing

I sing my song to Hank & Patsy's ghost
If this bars packed wall to wall or if it's slow
I've heard 'em say I'm better than most, I don't know
You'll have to ask Hank & Patsy's ghost

I pay my dues without complaining
Never straying from my plan
I'm on the trail of Hank & Patsy
This is where I make my stand
Win or lose I lift my glass and I'll make a silent toast
To those like me who sing for Hank & Patsy's ghost

I sing my song to Hank & Patsy's ghost
If this bars packed wall to wall or if it's slow
I've heard 'em say I'm better than most, but  I don't know
You'll have to ask Hank & Patsy's ghost

I've heard 'em say I'm better than most
You'll have to ask Hank & Patsy's ghost

Did You See Barbara Jean
Wrote this song with my buddy Tom Mitchell.  Used the format where the listener is just listening in on a conversation between two friends.  I have always thought the way the conversation is so understated and one guy is just fishing around for information about his long lost love is exactly how two men would handle the situation.  These guys are definately not sensative metro sexual types and you get the impression that they both know exactly what the conversation is about but respect each other enough to just pretend it is only a casual conversation.

Did You See Barbara Jean
(Lonnie Ratliff / Tom Mitchell)

Hey John how are things back home
I wish I could have gone with you
How'd we do in that homecoming game
What's the latest small town news
Did you go down to "Lukes" and have a beer
Still the same old scene ?
I'll bet you told em all I'm losing my hair
Hey John, did you see Barbara Jean
Did you see Barabara Jean

Me and Barbara Jean made plans
I almost bought a diamond ring
Sometimes I wonder how it might have been
Ain't we all got one of those things ?
Did you go down to "Lukes" and have a beer
And It's still the same old scene
Me and Barb were quite the pair
Yeah me and Barbara Jean
Did you see Barbara Jean

You say you heard Barbara Jean's back home
Well I never thought he was her kind
I guess we all have to live and learn
But some of us sure take our time
Some of us sure take our time

Hey John I gotta get back home
Now my mama is all alone
Tie up some loose ends daddy left undone
Maybe clear up some of my own
So you went down to "Lukes" and you had a beer
Still the same old scene
Well I know you told em all I'm losing my hair
Hey John did you see Barbara Jean
Did you see Barbara Jean

Producer’s Notes    Bengt Pedersen ~ "Pieces Of My Life"

Sometimes when an album I have produced has a strong effect on me I will try to take the time to write down my impressions of what each song means to me or any other thoughts I may have about the music. Not sure how much value that may have one way or the other but I like to think it may help the reviewers, DJ’s and fans that will be listening to the CD in the future have a little more insight as to how and maybe why each song turned out the way it did.

The first thing I noticed about “Pieces Of My Life” after we finished it and listened to it as a completed work was that it sounded like an album should sound. The songs seemed to flow from one to the next like they actually belonged together and all of them were adding another little hint as to who the singer Bengt Pedersen was and what he was all about musically. This don’t always happen when you have songs as diverse as “Hey Porter” to “Seed Catalog”. At first thought you wouldn’t think they would belong together on the same album but as you listen to the album they seem to be as well matched as an old couple who have been married for years. You can’t think of one without the other.

I don’t know that I can pick a favorite song from the album because every time I listen I decide I like another song best. I guess this is a sign that we just may have “Got it right” It sure sounds like it to me. I know that they don’t normally sell CD’s with a “Money Back Guarantee” but after listening to “Pieces Of My Life” over and over I sure can’t hear any reason why Bengt would ever have to return anyone’s money no matter how many he sells. It is albums that turn out like this one that makes all those hours of searching for just the right songs as well as all the time spent in the studio getting everything to sound just right worthwhile and last but definitely not least I gotta say we had one of the best teams of musicians working on this project that you could ever ask for. All in all I can honestly say I could not be more proud to have my name on this CD of Bengt’s and It will always be a piece of my life.
